Let me be honest with you. I thought I knew exactly what to expect from Tom Cruise in 2026.

Another Mission: Impossible. Another death-defying stunt. Another sprint across a rooftop somewhere exotic.

But I was wrong. Dead wrong.

Cruise has two major movies hitting our screens this year. One is exactly what you expect—a massive action spectacle. The other? A bizarre, satirical comedy from one of the most respected directors alive.

Here is everything you need to know about Tom Cruise’s 2026 movie lineup.

First Up: Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (Now Streaming)

Let us start with the familiar one.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning hit theaters earlier this year. It now officially streams on Prime Video as of April 2, 2026 .

If you missed it on the big screen, you can now watch Ethan Hunt’s final chapter from your couch.

What is the movie about?

The official synopsis keeps it simple: “Our lives are the sum of our choices” . Classic Ethan Hunt philosophy. The film follows Cruise’s IMF agent as he faces his most personal mission yet.

Christopher McQuarrie returns to direct. He co-wrote the script with Erik Jendresen. This marks the eighth installment in the long-running franchise .

The numbers tell a story

Tom Cruise

The film currently holds a Certified Fresh 80% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 427 reviews . That is solid. Not franchise-best territory, but respectable.

At the box office, the film grossed over $598 million worldwide . A good number, though lower than Dead Reckoning Part One.

The ensemble cast includes familiar faces:

  • Hayley Atwell
  • Simon Pegg
  • Ving Rhames
  • Esai Morales
  • Pom Klementieff
  • Henry Czerny

Also look for Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Tramell Tillman, and Angela Bassett .

Why “The Final Reckoning” matters

Cruise has confirmed this is his last ride as Ethan Hunt. The franchise may continue, but Tom Cruise hangs up the IMF badge after this one .

Think about that. Twenty years. Eight movies. Countless broken bones. One man.

It feels like the end of an era. And you can now watch that ending from your living room.

The Big One: Digger (October 2, 2026)

Tom Cruise

Now let us talk about the movie that has everyone scratching their heads.

Digger arrives in theaters on October 2, 2026 . And nothing about this movie looks like a typical Tom Cruise project.

Who is behind the camera?

Alejandro González Iñárritu directs. Yes, that Iñárritu. The man behind BirdmanThe Revenant, and Bardo .

This marks Iñárritu’s first English-language feature since The Revenant (2015) . That film won Leonardo DiCaprio his long-awaited Oscar.

Iñárritu co-wrote the script with his Birdman collaborators Nicolas Giacobone and Alexander Dinelaris, plus Sabina Berman .

The tagline says it all

The poster and teaser carry a simple promise: “A comedy of catastrophic proportions” .

Let me repeat that. Tom Cruise. In a comedy. From the director of The Revenant.

This is not what anyone expected.

What is Digger about?

Tom Cruise

Here is the official logline from Warner Bros:

Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, described as “the most powerful man in the world.” He embarks on “a frantic mission to prove that he is humanity’s saviour before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything” .

The teaser shows Cruise dancing with a shovel on the edge of a massive building . The poster arranges the title letters vertically to form a figure holding a spade while wearing cowboy boots .

Industry buzz suggests the film follows a global leader who believes he alone can save humanity. But his actions cause the very disaster he claims to prevent .

Iñárritu himself told Deadline: “This is a wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It’s insane. He makes me laugh every day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so fu*king impressed and happy” .

The cast is stacked

Digger brings together an incredible ensemble :

  • Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall)
  • John Goodman (playing the US President)
  • Michael Stuhlbarg
  • Jesse Plemons
  • Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me)
  • Riz Ahmed
  • Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon)

John Goodman plays the President of the United States. That alone sells tickets .

Production details

The film shot in the UK over six months . Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros produced it. Cruise also serves as a producer .

This is Cruise’s first film with Warner Bros since Edge of Tomorrow over a decade ago. He signed a deal with Warner Bros Discovery in January to develop and produce theatrical films .

The release date originally belonged to The Batman: Part II. Warner Bros moved that sequel to 2027 and slotted Digger into the prime October spot .

Oscar buzz already

Industry experts already point to Digger as a strong awards season contender . Iñárritu has a history with the Venice Film Festival. Birdman21 Grams, and Bardo all debuted there. Expect Digger to premiere at Venice in September 2026 .

Cruise has never won a competitive Oscar. He has three nominations: Born on the Fourth of JulyJerry Maguire, and Magnolia. Some believe Digger could finally break his losing streak .

Wouldn’t that be something? Tom Cruise winning an Oscar for a satirical comedy about a delusional world leader. The irony writes itself.

What About Top Gun 3?

You might wonder about Top Gun 3. I wonder too.

Paramount has not officially announced a release date. Cruise remains busy with Digger and other commitments. Nothing concrete exists for 2026 or even 2027 .

So do not hold your breath. Maverick may fly again someday. But not this year.

The Big Picture: A Pivotal Year for Cruise

2026 marks a fascinating turning point for Tom Cruise.

On one hand, he closes a chapter. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning ends his two-decade run as Ethan Hunt. That franchise defined modern action cinema. It set standards for practical stunts that no one else dares to match.

On the other hand, he opens a new one. Digger represents something completely different. A dark comedy. A character piece. A collaboration with an arthouse legend.

Cruise has spent years proving he can run faster and jump higher than anyone. Now he wants to prove he can make us laugh. And think. And squirm.

Iñárritu does not make easy movies. Birdman was a fever dream about ego and relevance. The Revenant was brutal survival horror. Bardo was a surreal meditation on identity.

If Digger follows that pattern, Cruise will not just act. He will transform.

Where to Watch Tom Cruise Movies in 2026

Here is your simple guide:

MovieRelease DateWhere to Watch
Mission: Impossible – The Final ReckoningNow streamingPrime Video
DiggerOctober 2, 2026Theaters (IMAX available)

Digger will play in traditional theaters and IMAX. Given Iñárritu’s visual style, I strongly recommend the biggest screen you can find .

Final Thoughts

I will admit something. I did not see Digger coming.

When someone says “Tom Cruise movie,” my brain goes to helicopters and cliff jumps. Not satirical comedies about powerful men destroying the world.

But maybe that is exactly what Cruise needs right now. He has mastered the action genre. He has nothing left to prove there. Top Gun: Maverick made nearly $1.5 billion. Mission: Impossible remains a reliable hit.

What challenges him now? What scares him?

Apparently, dancing with a shovel while Iñárritu yells “faster, slower, weirder” from behind a camera.

I cannot wait to see it.

Mark your calendars: October 2, 2026. Digger. A comedy of catastrophic proportions.
