Let me start with a fact. The Scream franchise has survived for three decades. Seven movies. Countless Ghostface masks. And a loyal fanbase that keeps coming back for more.

But Scream 7 faced an unusual journey to the screen. The studio fired Melissa Barrera. Jenna Ortega left. Christopher Landon departed as director. Then franchise creator Kevin Williamson stepped in to direct for the first time .

The result hit theaters on February 27, 2026 . The question is simple: does it honor the legacy, or does it fall flat?

Here is everything you need to know about the plot, the cast, the box office numbers, and what the critics are saying.

The Plot: Sidney’s Daughter Becomes the New Target

The film picks up years after the events of Scream VI. Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) has built a new life in a quiet town called Pine Grove . She is married to Mark (Joel McHale) and raising her teenage daughter, Tatum (Isabel May) .

The official synopsis reads: “When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter becomes the next target” .

The film deliberately mirrors the original Scream’s structure. Tatum is the same age Sidney was when Ghostface first attacked. The killer wants to target her, not just Sidney .

But here is the twist. The new Ghostface uses AI deepfakes of dead characters to torment Sidney. Matthew Lillard returns as Stu Macher. Scott Foley returns as Roman Bridger. Even David Arquette appears as Dewey Riley . Their presence comes through digital manipulation, not resurrection.

The killers’ motive ties back to earlier films. One Ghostface draws inspiration from Sidney’s book Out of Darkness (a key plot point in Scream 4). Another is upset that Sidney did not return for Scream 6 to stop those killings .

The Cast: Who Returns and Who Is New

Scream 7 brings back familiar faces while introducing new blood. Here is the breakdown.

Who Did Not Return

Three key actors from Scream (2022) and Scream VI did not return:

  • Melissa Barrera – Fired by Spyglass Media over social media posts about the Gaza war, which the studio deemed antisemitic
  • Jenna Ortega – Departed due to scheduling conflicts with Wednesday Season 2
  • Hayden Panettiere – Did not return as Kirby Reed

The Director’s Cut and Alternate Ending

Kevin Williamson shot an alternate ending that test audiences rejected. Here is what happened.

The film uses AI deepfakes to bring back Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard). Williamson told Esquire that they “shot a little coda at the end that we had in our back pocket” .

In the alternate ending, Stu would have appeared as a living character, not just an AI creation. But test audiences did not want him alive.

Williamson explained: “The decision was that the audience wanted him dead. It makes more sense [if he’s dead]. It’s more real. If he’s alive, that’s a big stretch. We live in a world now where with fake AI, we know that’s possible” .

The alternate ending will likely appear on the Blu-ray release .

Box Office Performance: A Franchise Record

Scream 7 Review

Scream 7 opened strong but faced steep drops. Here are the numbers.

MetricAmount
Opening Weekend (Domestic)$63.6 million
Second Weekend Drop73.3%
Third Weekend Drop50.9%
Domestic Total (as of April 3)$119.6 million
International Total$85.4 million
Worldwide Total$205 million

The film achieved two major milestones:

  1. Highest-grossing Scream film worldwide – The first in the franchise to cross $200 million globally
  2. Fourth Scream film to cross $100 million domestically

However, the steep second-weekend drop of 73.3% signals weak word-of-mouth . The film cannot beat Halloween (2018), which earned $259.9 million worldwide .

Critical Reception: What Reviewers Said

Critics gave Scream 7 mixed to negative reviews. The main complaints: predictable plot, weak new characters, and lack of subversion.

Reelviews (James Berardinelli) – Negative

Berardinelli delivered the harshest review. He wrote:

“Scream 7 has no plot to speak of; it’s a mere casserole of tired horror clichés… With this outing, the series has fully embraced the very archetypes Wes Craven once delighted in lampooning. There is no satire to be found here” .

He criticized the pacing: “After the obligatory opening murder, the narrative downshifts into 30 minutes of teen angst—a misguided attempt to flesh out secondary characters who aren’t on screen long enough for the audience to learn their names” .

His verdict: “A franchise-charring dumpster fire” .

Dread Central – Mixed (3/5)

Dread Central’s Josh Korngut gave the film 3 out of 5 stars. He wrote:

“For a franchise built on upending expectations, this return plays things frustratingly safe and confusingly predictable. The central issue is a near-total lack of subversion or twist of the knife when it comes to audience expectations” .

However, he praised Neve Campbell: “She delivers a grounded and convincing performance. This iteration of Sidney Prescott feels human and imperfect, defined by protective parental instincts and slight emotional messiness” .

He also noted the returning cast’s strength: “Courteney Cox returns as Gale Weathers and immediately injects her scenes with much-needed energy and charm. Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown’s paired charisma consistently outshines that of the new ensemble” .

The biggest problem? The new teen characters. Korngut wrote: “Tatum, positioned as the film’s shiny new central figure, emerges as the weakest link. She comes across as underdeveloped and largely reactive” .

The Hollywood Reporter – Neutral to Positive

Scream 7 Review

The Hollywood Reporter focused on the behind-the-scenes story. Williamson told THR that he built the film around Neve Campbell.

“I knew what she wanted. Yes there was the salary dispute and paying her, but she’s also an actress and she wants to act. She wants a role. So we wanted to do a Sidney-centric film and catch up with Sidney Prescott all these years later” .

The report notes that pro-Palestine protesters marched outside the L.A. premiere over Melissa Barrera’s firing .

ComicBook.com – Mixed

ComicBook.com praised the film’s connection to earlier sequels. The killers’ motive ties back to Scream 4 and Scream 6 .

However, they noted: “It’s a nice bit of connectivity, even if it’s a little flimsy in the long run. This deep into a slasher series, the foundation usually shows cracks” .

What Works: The Strengths

Neve Campbell’s Performance

Critics across the board praise Campbell’s return. Dread Central notes she “anchors the film with lived-in resilience that reminds audiences why Sidney remains the franchise’s necessary emotional core” .

Reelviews adds: “Neve Campbell appears fully committed. While she doesn’t quite reach Jamie Lee Curtis’s ‘PTSD-survivor’ heights from the Halloween reboot, she has her moments” .

The Legacy Cast

Gale Weathers, Mindy, and Chad bring energy to the screen. Dread Central notes that when these characters share scenes with the younger cast, “the contrast becomes more apparent, highlighting the thinness of the new crew” .

The Gore

The film delivers on violence. Dread Central notes that “while Scream 7 lacks meaningful surprises or subversion, it still offers moments of genuine tension and several effective scares” .

The opening sequence, though spoiled in the trailer, contains “some of the film’s most satisfying nastiness” .

What Doesn’t Work: The Weaknesses

Predictable Plot

Multiple critics note the lack of surprises. Dread Central writes: “The marketing campaign reveals far too much, including the lion’s share of its opening sequence, while the film itself offers few to no genuine surprises” .

Weak New Characters

Isabel May’s Tatum is the biggest disappointment. Dread Central states she “emerges as the weakest link. She comes across as underdeveloped and largely reactive, carried from scene to scene rather than driving the narrative” .

Mckenna Grace, a rising star, feels “especially wasted, given material that remains largely surface-level and vapid” .

Lack of Emotional Investment

Dread Central notes: “The film does not spend enough time with almost anyone to make their deaths resonate. Without that investment, the violence loses its sting” .

Kevin Williamson’s Direction

Reelviews criticizes Williamson’s visual style. Despite being a legendary horror writer, “his lack of visual polish is evident. He hits the ‘money shots’ well enough but botches the establishing moments, neutering the impact” .

The Ghostface Reveal: Who Are the Killers?

Scream 7 Review

Spoiler warning: The following section reveals the killers’ identities.

The film features three Ghostface killers .

First Ghostface (Karl): An escaped mental patient with no connection to Sidney. Gale Weathers runs him over with her car early in the film .

Second Ghostface (Marco): Played by Ethan Embry. He works at a mental institution and feeds information to the mastermind .

Third Ghostface (Jessica Bowden): Played by Anna Camp. She is Sidney’s sweet neighbor. Her motive: Sidney’s book Out of Darkness inspired her to kill her abusive husband. She became obsessed with Sidney and wanted to give her another chance to be a hero .

Where to Watch Scream 7

As of April 2026, Scream 7 is still playing in theaters. The film has completed five weeks of release .

Theatrical run: February 27, 2026 – present

Digital release: Not yet announced

Streaming release: Not yet announced (expected on Paramount+ after the theatrical window)

Final Verdict: Should You Watch Scream 7?

Watch Scream 7 if:

  • You are a longtime fan who wants to see Neve Campbell return as Sidney
  • You enjoy practical gore and violent set pieces
  • You are curious about the AI deepfake cameos of dead characters
  • You want to complete the franchise watch-through

Skip Scream 7 if:

  • You expect sharp satire and genre subversion (the film’s original strength)
  • You dislike predictable plots with few surprises
  • You need well-developed new characters to invest in
  • You were a fan of Melissa Barrera’s character from Scream (2022) and Scream VI

Scream 7 is not the worst horror film of 2026. But it is not the sharp, clever satire that made the original a classic. It plays safe. It relies on nostalgia. And it fails to develop its new characters.

The film works best as a vehicle for Neve Campbell. She delivers. Courteney Cox delivers. The returning Meeks-Martin twins deliver. Everyone else? Forgettable.
